For a little over the last decade, I've been using Photoshop to design UI for Roblox.

Of course back when I started, Figma and many of these modern design tools were not really a thing.

Besides, game development requires designs that are much more stylized and artistic than compared to things like websites and mobile applications.

So when I first started, this wasn't really that uncommon and most people used Photoshop as a general all purpose design tool.

Then Figma was introduced.

Along with software like Adobe XD, Sketch and so forth (the order may not be correct haha).

You may ask, what is the difference and why is this a big deal at all?

Why can't you just pick one and use it?

I'll start with this:

This is what happens when you zoom in to a design on Photoshop.

What do you see?

That's right. Pixels.

In Photoshop, all of the designs are raster graphics, meaning the layers and ui elements (except for unrasterized shapes) are recognized like so.

In Figma?

I can zoom in as much as I want and the visual fidelity will remain the same, meaning the whole design is infinitely scalable, because the design is vector based.

There are a multitude of other factors to take into consideration, but this is probably the biggest and most significant.

The best comparison would be Adobe Illustrator, which is also a vector based graphics software, used to design logos in SVG format, which is short for "Scalable Vector Graphics".

There are so many more reasons, and all of these are precisely what makes Figma the "standard" as a design tool.

I see so many people that still currently do not understand the difference, or what "Figma" really is at all.

And that's complete okay—I was in the same boat for a long time.

This is not to say that the tools define our work—they don't.

But we should use the tools that are created to facilitate and help our creative expression.

So if you're hesitant about trying Figma or something new in general, I was the same way, but I would highly recommend you giving it a try.
